Rose Chan (陳嘉桓) was sexually harassed by Benny Chan (陳浩民) and Joe Ma (馬德鐘) while dining out in Hengdian, China several days ago. Sunday Magazine published photos chronicling the sexual harassment, in which the drunk Benny and Joe forcibly kissed and touched Rose inappropriately at a restaurant, which elicited public shock and outrage. Yesterday at 3 PM, a tired Rose Chan, accompanied by her management company and lawyer, appeared at the crowded press conference, which teemed with over fifty reporters, to personally explain the incident.
At the press conference, Rose’s manager addressed the media, noting that Rose had encountered an unpleasant experience while in Hengdian, China. Rose’s manager noted that sexual harassment was a criminal offense. The entertainment industry was a community where veteran artists were supposed to support younger artists. It should not be a place for scums to exist and make the entertainment industry reek of ill repute. The police will be alerted to punish such unscrupulous perpetrators!
Rose Chan Too Scared to React Amidst HarassmentAfter her manager spoke, Rose addressed the crowd, “Thank you everyone for your concern. After the incident took place, I was very upset, as were my family, sifu, and management company. While working in Hengdian, I went out to dinner with a group of artists because I possess very good relations with Sammo Hung (洪金寶) and Timmy Hung (洪天明). I trust Timmy Hung very much. On the night of the supper, nothing [out-of-place] happened before Timmy got drunk and the [sexual harassment] occurred after he was imbibed with alcohol. Veterans who treated me as a younger sister suddenly became different people. At the time, I was extremely scared and did not know how to react ….”
Reliving the moment, Rose’s eyes filled with tears. After a brief pause, Rose continued, “My martial arts sifu advised that I be careful under all circumstances. I really did not possess enough awareness. I have to apologize to my sifu and in other regards!”
After Rose’s public statement, her lawyer stated, “We understand that this incident may lack [comprehensive] proof, but we will describe the nature of the incident accordingly to the Hong Kong police. We will also refer the matter to our lawyer in mainland, China and see whether it is necessary to file a police report in ZheJiang Province.”
When reporters asked Rose whether she put up resistance during the sexual harassment, Rose nodded her head. When reporters asked the duration of the harassment, Rose’s lawyer answered on her behalf, that the details of the case cannot be disclosed.
Asked why Rose did not run away from the perpetrators harassing her, Rose noted that she could not react in time. In addition, she was unfamiliar with the place [and circumstances] and could not run away. As to Joe Ma’s claim on his blog that he has already received Rose and her sifu, Sin Kwok Lam’s (冼國林) understanding, and his intention to donate money to the Tung Wah Group of hospitals, Rose manager, said, “Sin Sifu did not notify me!”
Police Report Filed for Sexual HarassmentThe press conference lasted for approximately ten minutes before it concluded. After leaving the venue, Rose arrived at the Kwun Tong Police Station to file a sexual harassment report. Rose stayed at the police station for five hours and left at 10:30 PM. Rose left a statement with police and will let the authorities handle the matter onwards. Asked whether she felt embarrassed during the filing of the police report, Rose noted that she only described how she felt at the time.
Rose will return to Hengidan tomorrow to film movie, Laugher Shaking Shaolin "笑功震武林". Asked whether she will meet with Joe Ma and Benny Chan again, Rose’s manager noted that they were currently working on different filming projects. Asked whether she will meet the two men for dinner again, Rose said, “I will increase my level of awareness from now onwards.”
